There are 2 varieties of township in Michigan: basic legislation township and charter. Charter township position was made by the Legislature in 1947 and grants extra powers and stream-lined administration in order to deliver greater defense from annexation by a town. As of April 2001[update], there have been 127 constitution townships in Michigan.
